La grande maggioranza delle traduzioni è piuttosto univoca e chiara. “Zimbabwe” è sempre “Zimbabwe”. “Cinque” è normalmente sempre tradotto con “five”. Sono le altre quelle che richiedono talento, cognizione, creatività, ricerca. Anche la selezione del registro e la scelta fra i vari sinonimi è importante. Se devo tradurre la parola "gastronomia" in inglese, dovrò valutare con attenzione il potenziale lettore della mia traduzione e scegliere se utilizzare il termine più ricercato, "gastronomy", o quello più comune, "fine food", per assicurarmi che il messaggio possa essere recepito correttamente.

Vi sono anche altri elementi che un buon traduttore dovrà valutare. Ad esempio, quando l'italiano usa una parola inglese devo chiedermi se in inglese questa parola ha la stessa valenza o se è meglio utilizzarne un'altra.

Alcune frasi molto comuni che ricorrono spessissimo in moltissimi testi italiani non hanno una traduzione inglese unica e specifica. Pensate ad esempio a "vero e proprio" che letteralmente sarebbe  "truly and really" ma che, a seconda del testo, può richiedere traduzioni del tutto diverse, come negli esempi che ho indicato nella tabella seguente. Ogni contesto richiede una nuova traduzione.

Sono queste frasi, apparentemente banali, che fanno aggrottare le sopracciglia e grattare la testa ai traduttori italiano/inglese di tutto il mondo.

Non contenta delle soluzioni da me raccolte nel corso della mia carriera, mi sono rivolta ai colleghi della comunità virtuale di Yahoo "IT-EN", un gruppo di traduttori professionisti generosi e ricchi di esperienza. Insieme abbiamo redatto un elenco di queste parole e frasi malandrine.

La molla che sta alla base di tutte le decisioni di un traduttore è sempre il contesto, da quello della società in generale fino a quello della frase. Molte delle parole e delle espressioni segnalate qui di seguito, specie quelle che non sono né sostantivi né aggettivi, vengono spesso assorbite in frasi o paragrafi rielaborati, difficili da ricreare in questa sede. Il principale intento della tabella è quello di suggerire nuove soluzioni adatte al contesto.
